Dr. Watson's Equine Herbal Formulas

Designed by Dr. B. Watson, DVM., these all natural herbal supplements have been meticulously researched and purposefully blended to combat the most common issues facing our horses today. The herbs and herbal preparations that we offer at First Place Feeds are designed to provide the necessary nutritional supplements not only to help your horse deal with some of the health difficulties and stresses which cause your horse to perform, look and feel at less than an optimal level but will also help prevent many of these problems from developing. This is not done as a medicinal cure so much as simply allowing these herbs to provide important nutrients that your horses' body requires.

Digestive Aid

Dr. Watson has taken the standard of using Lactobacillus Acidophilus as an aid to digestion and enhanced it with herbal preparations to improve efficacy.  When dealing with digestive issues, attention to liver detoxification becomes critically important. This is further supported by the addition of B vitamins which help the appetite and also function to cleanse the liver.

• Alfalfa provides Vitamin K as well as providing the digestive enzymes of lipase(fats), amylase(starch), protease(proteins), emulsin and invertase(sugars), pectinase(cell walls), cellulose(fibre).

• Garlic for its many benefits not the least of which is its ability to get rid of unwanted bacteria in the bowel

• Dandelion is used to help with detoxification of the liver and kidneys

• Fennel and Fenugreek are both well recognized in the herbal field for their strengths in dealing with indigestion

• Milk Thistle is considered the premiere herb for liver cleansing

• Methionine is included to provide a sulphur-containing amino acid which is a potent liver detoxifier

Energy is a function of training and that can’t come in a jar. What we have done here is provide a formulae that will enhance circulation, combat fatigue and help create an “athlete’s sense of euphoria” for better stamina.

Ulcer Relief

We are hearing that ulcers are a common problem at least in performance horses. To deal with this we selected ingredients that will strengthen the immune system, promote wound healing, act as an astringent, provide antibacterial support or soothe mucous membranes, which we felt were the key factors in providing relief.

• Marshmallow as the primary ingredient provides mucus protection of the inflamed digestive tract

• Valerian helps to calm the system

The purpose of this product is self evident and I have selected ingredients either for their specific activity in that area or because they enhance the other ingredients in some fashion. The goal is to help the central nervous system function properly rather than stultify the brain as many calming drugs are inclined to do.

Our equine Anti-inflammatory derives its efficacy from many herbs which function as anti-inflammatories in their own right combined with herbs that improve tissue oxygenation, those that strengthen immune function or flush toxins from the cells and then the body. Finally we use herbs to provide essential nutrients to rebuild the body. 

• Yucca is used to control pain while reducing inflammation in joints, tendons, and muscles

When we designed this product we needed to decide what exactly we were aiming to deal with. Pain encompasses anything from arthritis to all sorts of cuts and bruises. In the end we realized that what we were looking for was a product that simply dealt with muscle pain and have built a product that can be used on a day to day basis for working animals.
